What will you do when you can detach from fear whenever you need?

What will it be like, when you are facing ‘that’ challenge, to just tune out any quaking dread so you can get on with it?

Of course, fear is not a useless feeling. Far from it. It’s a highly evolved mechanism that warns you of danger so that you can protect yourself. It’s a powerful, instinctive response that takes no account of your plans or wishes.

Fear’s only aim is to keep you safe, and alive. It’s fear, raw fear, that gets you to automatically leap out of the way when a vehicle careers off the road towards you.

What does it take to overcome fear?

Have you ever seen that video about the laws of motion and how trustworthy they are? The presenter attaches a huge weight to a pendulum and then sets it swinging. The presenter has carefully calculated exactly how far the pendulum will go.

A volunteer is standing on a spot directly in line with the swing. The volunteer’s nose is half an inch (one half inch!) beyond the furthest point of the swing. He is perfectly safe.

But imagine what it feels like to see that huge weight swinging inexorably towards you, looking like it’s going to smash you right in the face. Even if you knew that the calculations were correct, even if you knew you were really quite safe, would you be able to resist the tremendous urge to jump aside?

Well, the demonstration will be a flop if the volunteer jumps aside, or even flinches, won’t it? But to be able to stand completely still while a great iron ball swings through the air towards him, the volunteer has to be able to tune out, to completely block, his own instinctive life saving responses.

He has to be able to put what he wants to do, and knows he can do, above what self preservation is trying to drive him to do.

That is a tremendously useful skill.
