Tune out the discomfort and find a place of calm focus while wearing personal protective equipment.

Do you feel smothered, stifled and claustrophobic when wearing PPE?

Is the discomfort of wearing PPE interfering with your effectiveness at work?

If you hate working in PPE, you’re in good company. Many of us feel hot, restricted, or claustrophobic underneath our protective gear. You may even experience pain, or find it hard to breathe in PPE. Not only that, but having these layers as a constant barrier between ourselves and others can make communication more difficult, leading to feelings of frustration and even isolation. Add this to the everyday pressures inherent in healthcare work, and the stress can feel almost unbearable.

But of course, not wearing PPE is often not an option. In certain situations it is imperative, for your own health and that of your clients or patients, that you take appropriate protective measures. It’s important, then, to learn to feel comfortable in PPE so that you can fulfil your role to the best of your ability and provide excellent care for your clients without compromising on safety.

The good news is, no matter how uncomfortable you currently feel in your PPE, you are innately capable of getting used to it. We humans are remarkably adaptable creatures. Throughout history we have had to adapt to all sorts of adverse conditions, requiring all sorts of protective gear. We’ve evolved to be able to exist in these difficult situations without feeling a constant sense of discomfort.

But how?

Tuning out the familiar

Our brains are wired to notice changes and to tune out things that stay the same. If you’ve ever moved into a house near a train line or under a flight path, you’ve experienced this firsthand. For the first few weeks you probably found the constant noise maddening. But as time went on, you noticed it less and less, until eventually it didn’t bother you at all.

So it is with the experience of wearing PPE, or any new type of clothing or equipment. it’s natural that the first few times we have to wear PPE we will be highly attuned to the uncomfortable sensations that come along with it. But the more often we wear it, the more our brain starts to classify those sensations as normal – and therefore to tune them out.

Fortunately, there’s a way we can speed this process up.
