We devote quite extraordinary energy and ingenuity to climbing social ladders, hoping to be top dog, or at least higher up than the next guy/gal. We often push others down to enhance our own position. And we’re ultra sensitive to signs or feelings that someone is pushing us down.

When you see it written out in black and white, you can see how ridiculous this is. You know consciously, logically, we’re all the same under the skin. No one is really ‘better’ than you. Or ‘worse’. No one is really your ‘superior’. Or ‘inferior’. They might know more (or less) than you about something. They might be more (or less) skilled than you at something. But this does not make them significantly different from you.

Why it feels hard not to be intimidated

But it’s one thing to know this, and another thing to feel comfortable and at ease with who you are in any setting, with anyone who may be there. Our status consciousness is part of our shared genetic inheritance, our evolved survival strategies, and you can’t just shed it because you don’t want it, any more than you can change the color of your eyes.

Fortunately, status consciousness is not the only thing we have evolved.

We also have our powerful thinking brains – the part of you that can stand apart from status games and see them for what they are. The part of you that can accept being a status conscious primate without feeling that you are therefore defined by your status.
