Finally, optimists see the causes of negative situations as highly specific – for example, “I failed the test because I didn’t study enough” – whereas pessimists tend to assign more global causes that apply to any and all situations – “I failed the test because I’m stupid.”

It’s easy to see how optimism can itself increase the chances of good outcomes in life. If you assume that a bad situation is permanent and there’s nothing you can do about it, you’re not likely to take action to change it. Worse still, if you’ve globalized the cause of that bad situation, you may start to feel helpless to effect change in any aspect of your life.

If, on the other hand, you’re optimistic about your ability to influence the outcome, you’ll do whatever it takes to turn things around in your favor. You’ll keep on keeping on because you know that you have the power to help things turn out for the best. And your eventual success will reinforce your conviction in that belief.
