But if we spend all our time creating possible future scenarios, it can interfere with our ability to fully appreciate the present and prevent us from actually taking action to work towards the future we want. So we need to find a healthy balance between living in the present and planning for the future.

Focusing so much on future scenarios, which are by their very nature uncertain, can cause significant anxiety. And that goes double if you’re prone to focusing on the negatives. But remember that reality will never quite turn out as you expect. Things may well turn out to be much more manageable than you think.

Not only that, but your future self will not be the exact same person you are today. By the time the future comes around, you will have learned new ways of coping and grown as a person. You will be more capable of dealing with adversity than ever. And the best way to become a more capable, resilient person in the future is to work hard at overcoming challenges in the present.

The future is outside your control

There is nothing you can do to directly influence a future scenario right now. The only thing you can control in the present is the present (which of course, if you play your cards right, can help build a better future).

So when you find yourself musing over the future, stop and ask yourself: What can I do right now? And know that whatever the future may hold, you can and will deal with it. After all, you’ve been doing it your whole life!
